By far, hands down, the best acne medication is called Benzoyl Peroxide. It comes in various strengths (2.5%, 5%, 10%).
Be warned, the best acne medication will falter if you don't learn how to take care of your skin.
What is the good of putting acne medication on a dirty face - or a face that is improperly cleaned? It won't work!
If you start out using your acne medication at its highest dose and frequency, your skin will likely dry out and peel. To combat this, start out using a small dose once a day and then work up to the desired dosage. This will help your skin grow accustomed to the new acne medication without traumatizing it!
So how do you make the most out of your acne medication? Here are some steps to help you out:
1. Cleanse your face with a cleanser for your skin type. Do not use regular soap - most soaps are deodarant types and will irritate the skin on your face. You can even use a 3-in-1 cleanser to save some steps. Most 3-in-1 cleansers contain an exfoliator and a freshener. If you have severe acne with open sores, find a cleanser without fine grains in it. The fine grains will aggravate your sores.
2. Exfoliate: again, use one for your skin type. An exfoliator helps get rid of dry skin that tends to contribute to clogged pores. If you have open sores, there are exfoliators that don't have the gritty grain in them that would aggravate your acne.
3. Freshen: This is usually a stringent that cleans and closes your pores. Some acne medication comes in this form. If your acne medication comes in the form of a lotion or a gel, you would apply it after this step.
4. Moisturize. Find one suitable for your skin type. Many moisturizers contain sunscreen - which is absolutely essential to use for your skin to heal. If your moisturizer doesn't contain sunscreen, apply sunscreen before you apply moisturizer for it to do the most good.
I hope this helps you make the most out of your acne medication. Be sure to continue the above steps even after your skin heals to keep it clear. If you are prone to severe acne, you must be diligent in keeping up with the care of your skin.
