Occasional Acne Outbreaks-What To Do

You’ve seen hundreds of commercials advertising acne products for those plagued with unsightly blemishes. But what if you’re one of those who have occasional acne outbreaks and those products are too strong for you to use? If you use those acne products designed for those with perpetual problems, you may find that it dries out your skin too much.

Here is an easy suggestion. It is necessary to use a good skin care program that contains a cleanser, exfoliator, freshener (toner), and moisturizer that is designed to work for your skin type (dry, normal, combination, oily). Then, use acne medication products as needed.

If you suffer from occasional acne outbreaks, use an acne treatment gel on the areas where you are prone to breakout. That way, your skin doesn’t get too dried out from using an acne product all over your face.

Look for these common ingredients found in over-the-counter acne creams or gels.

1. Benzoyl peroxide: is by far the most effective acne medication. It not only removes excess oil, but removes dead skin cells that can clog the pores. It comes in varying strengths of 2.5%, 5%, and 10%. The higher the strength, the stronger it is and the more cautious you need to be when using it.

2. Salicylic acid comes in .5% to 2% strength. It actually slows the shedding of cells inside hair follicles, helping prevent pores from clogging.

3. Glycolic acid & Lactic acid (both alpha hydroxyl acids) remove dead skin cells and stimulate growth of new skin, helping reduce appearance of acne scars.

All acne medication can irritate the skin, dry it out, and may cause redness. When first using an acne product, start out slowly with the smallest amount possible. Your skin will become accustomed to the product more easily and may not react adversely. You can increase the dosage of medication over time and as needed.

Top 5 Tips to Pick the Right Facial Cleanser

We all know that you must use a good skin care program to take care of your face. I can honestly say that I’ve only met one person who had absolutely perfect skin. She was 75 years old, and though her skin was sagging with age, she only had the wrinkles of a thirty year old and her skin was incredibly soft. She claimed that she inherited her good skin from her mother and has never had to do anything but use sunscreen. Amazing.

So, for the rest of us, picking the right cleanser is crucial to your skin care program. How many times have I heard a women complain that skin care just doesn’t work for her? Well, you have to be your own detective. Why would you use something that is ineffective? You must search for what will work.

Here are some tips to find the right cleanser.

1. Find the right cleanser for your skin type.

2. Opt for a 3-in-1 cleanser. A 3-in-1 cleanser not only contains the cleanser portion, but an exfoliator and freshener as well. This saves on other steps necessary to take care of your skin.

3. If you have normal to dry skin, but tend to break out in acne occasionally, don’t use a cleanser for combination or oily skin. It will dry out your face too much. Instead, opt for an acne treatment product and use it only on the places where you tend to break out.

4. After finding the right formula of cleanser, be sure to use it morning and night. In the morning, you wash away all the oil & dirt you’ve accumulated during the night. I don’t know anyone who washes their pillow case daily, or washes their hair before they go to bed to prevent any contaminants from touching their face. In any case, washing in the morning helps prep your face for applying moisturizer and your makeup. At night, you obviously wash off the dirt, grime, and makeup that you’ve accumulated through the day. If you don’t think your face is dirty, pay attention to how often you touch your face! This alone may cause acne outbreaks.

5. Never use any type of facial cleanser to remove eye makeup. They are too harsh for the delicate skin around the eye area. If you have a 3-in-1 cleanser, this is especially true as the grains in it can irritate your eye. Always use an eye makeup remover. They are effective and gentle enough to use on your eyes.
